Usually, the 21CLHK conference is in the heat of yearbook final stretch. Thus it has not been possible for me to attend. Due to the earlier Lunar New Year, the conference was held earlier than normal. Justin, Dana, and the team at 21st Century Learning do an amazing job of not only creating a meaningful conference on how to prepare students for the future (with and without technology), they also put serious intent and focus on ensuring that diverse voices are heard. 

Although I knew that this was among the best technology-focused conferences in the world, it was intimidating and confidence-building to see my face on the presentation wall with so many tech leaders who I have been inspired by through the years.

Without question, the aspect of my professional career in which I am most proud, is my affiliation with the Apple Distinguished Educator program. I am proud that I have been invited to two regional institutes, two global institutes and one regional academy to welcome new ADEs.  Contrary to some perceptions, the ADE program is not a simple yearly tech conference. We continually collaborate throughout the year both face to face and online. Sixnce 2013, I have steadily raised my rank within the Apple Distinguished Educator global online program via my steady contributions and collaboration. This is a closed community because we openly discuss the good, bad, and in-between aspects of our attempts to integrate Apple Technology in our classrooms and schools. Of course, we spend significant time discussing non-Apple and non-technical trends in education as well.

The Apple Teacher program was introduced in 2017 to help teachers learn how to use the powerful, free productivity tools provided on their personal or school-issued Apple devices. Teachers get excellent guided instruction with beautiful resources to help build rich creations that they can be proud of. Over the past 18 months, they have expanded into additional countries with different languages.  This program is completely free and very much worth the time of all educators.  Even if you feel that you know your Apple productivity tools well, it is very beneficial to see how other excellent educators and engineers from within Apple choose to show people how to use their tools.
 

Goal Progress Report - Behind Schedule, but enjoying catching up

A friend gave me a wonderful gift of credits toward any Great Courses video series of my wishes. Choosing the course was hard until I saw the name, Joel Sartore.

Joel Sartore is one of those photographers who you have never heard of. Yet you remember distinct, unrelated photos that made you stop in your tracks at different times of your life. You know his work, but probably don't know his name. Perhaps his most famous recent photo series is The Arc Project in which he is traveling the world (and recruiting other global journalists) to document baby photos of newborns of endangered species.  His hope is that since we have chosen for a few generations that we don't care enough about dying species, perhaps people will care more if we see beautiful photos of baby animals which may be part of the final generation of the species.

Honestly, I am not very far into this course. Yet I love his approach of not focusing on equipment which will become outdated, but on developing an eye and taste for photography. This approach can make your photos timeless. I also love his anecdotal stories of his life in which he learned the hard way that their are many times in life when we need to put the camera down and simply enjoy life. I am excited to learn more from this master!

I am thankful that we have the opportunity to choose our own Personalize Professional Development goals at Busan Foreign School.
For the 2017-2018 School year, I chose to focus on Domain 4: Professional Responsibilities - 4e Growing and Developing Professionally.

For my professional development goal this year, I chose:
Domain 4: Professional Responsibilities - 4e Growing and Developing Professionally Since yearbook class has less students than past years and occupies part of four periods most days, I have chosen to focus more on individual professional development goals rather than institutional development goals. My goals can be summarized as 3Cs: Connecting, Certification, Creating. For 'Connecting' my goal is to remain in the top 10% of all global Apple Distinguished Educators for our closed online collaboration community. This takes continual collaboration and sharing. For Certification, my goal is to earn at least three more technology skills certifications via Google, Apple and Flipped Learning Online Consortium, For Creating, I want to help students continually improve our digital publishing and yearbook publishing skills to improve students skills and help support our external marketing efforts.

Goal Progress Report - Complete  (Book & Webinars)

The Ditch That Textbook Digital Summit is a nine-day, FREE virtual event in December. It brings together some of the brightest minds in education to discuss technology, pedagogy and more. After the 2016 #DitchSummit, I chose to read the book by Matt Miller during the fall of 2017.  I completed all nine  sessions of the 2017 #DitchSummit and have continued learning via connections on Twitter made during this summit.
